The site began as a burial area over 4500 years ago and has changed many times during this period, with stones being added and the site being reformed several times. Part of the changes made to the site were the addition of the bluestones. These stones which were mined in Wales and were dragged to Stonehenge using the limited technologies of the era. This would have taken a large number of people and tremendous organisation.

London to Stonehenge is one of our most popular trips–and definitely the most mysterious. On this Stonehenge Tour you’ll get to see ancient stones with meanings that still remain hidden after thousands of years – and enormous monuments that have puzzled generations of archeologists.
Located in the county of Wiltshire, England, Stonehenge is a World Heritage site and the best known prehistoric site in Europe. Although we have no real way of knowing how it was used and how the people who built the site experienced it, since it’s ‘discovery ‘in the 18th century Stonehenge has fascinated and captivated visitors. It’s alignment with the Summer and Winter Solstices suggests links to the sun. More recently a Neolithic ‘calendar ‘ made up of the stones has been suggested.
The site obviously had some great significance for Neolithic people who over hundreds of years changed Stonehenge to what we see today. A special tour can be booked which allows visitors to walk amongst the stones. The Visitor Centre at Stonehenge houses over 250 archaeological objects discovered in the area around the site.
Travel in comfort through the beautiful Wiltshire countryside and look out for ancient burial mounds in the landscape as you head towards the enigmatic Salisbury Plain. If you're really lucky you might spot a crop circle or two (depends if the lawnmowers have been out though!).
You'll probably be feeling peckish by now so it's off to a traditional English pub for lunch. We suggest The Wheatsheaf at Lower Woodford, a lovely wood-panelled pub with a garden and play area for children, serving snacks and British comfort food. They usually have a good range of beers on too! You'll get to see more of the countryside as we take the scenic route back.
